"Marvel Vigilante Vanquishes Hollywood"
Vengeance has proven very sweet for the Punisher, Marvel's vigorous vigilante whose vendetta has captivated not only scores of avid readers but Hollywood producers as well. This summer marks the premiere of a major motion picture starring Dolph Lundgren of "Rocky" fame in the title role and Oscar-winning Lou Gossett, Jr. as Jake Berkowitz, the Punisher's longtime friend and police partner.
Supported by a multimillion dollar print, radio and television advertising campaign, the movie is scheduled to open in more than one thousand theatres nationwide. Of course, as faithful followers of the crusading crime fighter herald his much anticipated movie debut, there will be no shortage of Punisher publications to appeal to every palate and pocketbook.
The list includes two regular monthly comic books; a three-issue comic book movie adaptation; a full-size, black and white magazine for mainline racks; and a trade paperback, two bookshelf editions, and two graphic novels for specialty shops and trade bookstores.
Not surprisingly, all this exposure for the Punisher has not escaped the attention of a number of manufacturers who have signed on as licensees to sell sweatshirts/t-shirts; caps; mugs; model kits; bendable figures; and a Nintendo game.
